Super Mario 64, originally released for the Nintendo 64 console in 1996, now has a 21st century update. The Wii U was Nintendo’s first HD console, meaning there are hardly any Super Mario games.
Roystan Ross has recreated the first level of Super Mario 64 in the Unity Engine, and has released it for free to everyone. Yeap, you can actually play this recreation, something that is undoubtedly cool. What’s even more amazing is that this level is playable in your browser, meaning that you won’t have to download anything at all (though there is still an option for a desktop version in case you want one).
As Roystan Ross noted, there are currently no plans to recreate the other levels of Super Mario 64. Still, this demo will give you an idea of what a HD remake could look like.
“I currently do not have any plans to develop this any further or to resolve any bugs, unless they’re horrendously gamebreaking and horrendously simple to fix. This project is provided as-is, and you are free to use it for any purposes you like, with the exception of selling it for profit. “
Those interested can play it from Roystan’s blog (or download the desktop version).
Enjoy!
YouTube’s ‘CryZENx’ has released a brand new fan remake of Super Mario 64 in Unreal Engine 4. This time, CryZENx has recreated Cool Cool Mountain in Unreal Engine 4, and has made this remake available for download.
Now I know that some people don’t like CryZENx but let us tell you that this fella has managed to make the dream of playing a remake of Super Mario 64 come true for a lot of Mario fans. Yes, we are basically looking at small demos here but they are pretty cool and they feature the same gameplay mechanics that can be found in the original game.
Not only that, but his Zelda remakes are particularly impressive as they have updated the visuals of the classic Nintendo 64 Zelda games, while retaining all the gameplay features that most old-school fans enjoyed back in those days.
Furthermore, and contrary to other recreations, CryZENx has been constantly making his remakes available for download to pretty much everyone, without putting them behind paywalls.
